Pheasants and Geese

In addition to poultry (we keep a few pure breeds, including Ancona, Old English Game and Pekin bantams, alongside our large Rhode Island Reds) we have a selection of rare pheasant and geese breeds:

Temminck's Tragopan:Temminck's tragopan  In the wild, these live in thick, evergreen forests of North East Assam and North East China.
These are hardy birds, well suited to a planted aviary, and will come and eat from your hand. We have been successful in rearing a few young birds this year.

Siamese Fireback cock

Siamese Fireback: These pheasants live in Vietnam and Eastern Thailand, in dense lowland forests and bamboo thickets. They take 3 years to mature and be able to breed- we are hoping for our first chicks to hatch next year. The cock bird is very handsome, with a greyish upper body marked with wavy black lines and a bright red face mask. As in all pheasants, the female is less colourful, being chestnut brown, with black and white leg banding.

Golden pheasant cock bird
Golden Pheasant: A favourite of ours, these pheasants enjoy peanuts from your hand. Beautiful plumage coupled with easy maintenance make these a joy to own. They are extremely hardy, being native of China, they prefer to roost outside rather than inside their shelter. The male has a bright gold feathered crest with a black barred orange cape with which they display in Spring. We have successfully hatched and reared young birds this year.

Lady Amherst's: Originating in Western China, this is another stunning and easy breed to keep. The males have a scarlet crest, bright green and blue wings and a beautiful barred grey tail. They develop their full adult
plumage in their second year. It can be difficult to find pure Lady Amherst's Pheasants
as many have been crossed with the Golden pheasant.
